For more than 15 years, as a church family, we’ve encouraged everyone who is willing to read through the Bible every calendar year. Over the years, we’ve used two different versions of a Chronological Bible that sets a daily reading in historical order, a Straight-Through version that moves directly through from Genesis to Revelation by assigning a certain number of chapters each day, and finally several composite versions that mix together selections from the New and Old Testament.
A few years ago, we discovered what is called the M’Cheyne Plan. A 19th Century Scottish minister, Robert M’Cheyne, (1813-1843), developed this plan to take the members of his congregation through the New Testament and Psalms twice a year, and through the rest of the Bible once each year. This works out to approximately 4 chapters per day. While it does hop around, one of it’s core advantages is that we have readings from the New Testament throughout the year, rather than just the Fall, as happens with the other plans.
There are a number of ways that you can engage and keep up with the daily readings:
